I first watched this piece of performance poetry by Sarah Kay a while back, and thought, hey, that's cool. I knew it had been made into a book, and thought, that's the kind of story I'd like to read my kid, whenever life decides to bless me with one (hurry up, yeah?). But whilst I thought it was pretty awesome, it wasn't until yesterday when I was telling Hubby about it and played it for him that it reduced me to tears. Admittedly I was having a bit of a tough day, something that seems to be in abundant supply in my life right now, unfortunately, but there was just something, in that moment, that crushed me and gave me hope all at the same time.

It's pretty fucking beautiful right?

So if your world is feeling like it's made of sugar right now, find some strength in this, or else just have a good old cry, because sometimes you need to acknowledge your sadness before you can move on.
I'm not going to quote 'Hitchhiker's...' at you, but we all know that Thursday are Rubbish (with a captital R). What is categorically not rubbish is the small mass of kittens that we picked up yesterday. They're still a little timid, and a little on the runty side given that they're supposed to be around 9 weeks old, but my gosh if they aren't adorable.

This video will probably bore the pants off any non-cat people out there, so feel free to skip it, but their's nothing quite like 5 (well 4 really, Felix doesn't put in an appearance - something about an exclusive contract with some modelling agency? He told me to call his agent) romping and wrestling to brighten up a rather gloomy, awfully chilly morning.

I present to you, our kittens: Lily is the white one but the others all look very similar - affectionately nick-named diamond head, splodgy back and liney head when we were still deciding on names. Jemima has a white ear/diamond face marking, Batman is well, batman, and Grayson looks a bit like Batman, but has less of a white nose (confusing, right?). Enjoy!

One of the very few outfits I've actually 'planned' (taken two seconds to think about the night before, as opposed to my usual, throw on half my wardrobe at once and see what sticks method), based entirely around my positively ludicrous, but entirely fantastic new shoes. How mint are these babies?! No word of a lie, cost me £10. TEN POUNDS. Hubby was looking for running shoes (he's doing a triathalon next year, get him!), and I managed to find these, and a pair of short leg bright red wellies (also amazing, also really cheap) in Sports Direct - admittedly not the most glamorous of places, but really, who cares?

So yes, I'm wearing about 50 different colours, and I look like a Saved By The Bell extra, but do you know what, I'm OK with that. I love having fun with fashion, and some days, I think it does you good to look like a bit of an idiot occasionally (not that I do today, obviously I look awesome). I'm stoked to add these shoes to my repertoire and see what other kinds of crazy looks they can inspire. Do you have an statement pieces that you build looks around or do you just throw things together and hope it works? (No judgement, that's my favourite way to get dressed)

P.P.S. We say goodbye to the gorgeous Kinney and her lovely mother Violet yesterday - both off to find new forever homes, but we won't be foster cat-less for long as we're off to get 5 (FIVE!) 9 week old kittens tomorrow. We won't have them for long, which will probably be for the best as at that age they are completely exhausting, SO much energy! Check out my instagram/twitter feed tomorrow for updates/a ton of pictures.

I've been meaning to post more about the delightful day when I became Mrs B, and my best friend, the love of my life became my Hubby. It makes me feel all warm and mushy inside to remember it, which is probably worth hanging on to when we're bickering about who's turn it is to make the tea or feed the cats (these aren't things we actually argue about, he know's it's always his turn for both, but you get my point I hope).

A good half of people that read this blog were probably there on the day, and witnessed me sob my way through my vows (well, it was Hubby saying them to me that pushed me over really, but it was all pretty emotional like).

He even made me this little frame with a section of the vows that got us really choked up.

It all passed in a bit of a blur for me, but the one line that really sticks in my memory is "All that I am, and all that I have, I bring to you". Aww shucks. It still makes me well up now!

I've not exactly made a secret out of the fact that, despite being truly wonderful, getting married was, for me at least, a total stress-fest. But this bit? Best bit of the day, fo' sure. Everything else just melts away when you think that this is the moment where you get to commit your life to another, if front of everyone that means something to you, that's the important bit, the bit you remember. (Well, that and your cousin dedicating 'Wild Thing' to you on the karaoke and it making you cry because you're so <s>drunk</s> touched, but that's a story for another day kids).
This rather excellent photo, which I managed to sneak into the forefront of, was taken by the excellent Laura Babb of Babb Photography who took Hannah's photos that day.

Excellent though it is, does it really compare to this beauty that I snapped of the happy couple (using the fisheye from Hannah's magical box of cameras)?

As a result of said magical box of cameras (well, Hannah is a wedding photographer after all), there were a LOT of photographs being taken, and a small amount of silliness may have ensued. These are my favourites of Hubby & I, and are all, of course, nicked off Hannah's facebook (hopefully what with us being mates and that, she won't sue me for copyright infringement)

I wore an ASOS dress & hat (which I got off eBay), a really old scarf/necktie, a John Lewis school cardigan & Kurt Geiger heels. I was definitely channeling a 'retro air hostess' vibe, and I am OK with that. I think Hubby & I made quite the fashionable couple between my hat and his bow tie :D
This dress was a birthday present from my Hubby way back in March (he actually bought me two, what a doll), but only got a few wears before the long sleeves and synthetic fabric, not to mention the slip you have to wear underneath, all got too much in the heat of summer. But now it's cooler, darker, damper and y'know, generally a bit more miserable (getting up in the dark is just not ok in my book), it does at least mean I get to pull some of my warmer, woollier dresses out of the wardrobe, so that's one small perk.

Two more weeks and you might actually see me occasionally around these parts, I'm counting down the days so hard it hurts. Hope you can bear with me!

It feels like the longest time, but in truth, it's probably only been a week or a month or something stupidly short, but today, for the first time, in a while anyway, I feel truly, wonderfully happy.

I'm not feeling miserable about work (an unfortunately large constant in the last few months), I don't feel like we might never have a baby (we might, you never know, but I've stopped feeling like that's the end of the world), I don't feel down about our distinct lack of money. All these things that have been niggling at me for the last few months, causing me to feel ill, tired and stressed out, and causing more than a few arguments between me and my beloved - because we're both so tired, ill, and stressed out! -all of those things I've managed to some how, miraculously, just let them all go. Fed up of feeling like crap, I've changed what I can change, and I'm just learning to live with the rest of it.

The saying goes that 'Happiness is a journey, not a destination', so there's no promise I'll still feel this quiet contentment tomorrow, or even this afternoon. But for now, a devoted husband, a houseful of cats, a new Girls Aloud single... it's enough.
After our rather disastrous first experience of being cat fosterers, I can happily report that the second time around was a 100% success. We adopted the beautiful (and totally flea-ridden, yurgh!) Queenie & her kits, Leah, Jenna and Harry - already named when they arrived which saved us the endless deliberation of the first time.

These guys (called such because every 5 seconds we were just like, OH YOU GUYS, because they were either being totally adorable, or really really naughty!) came to us at around 8 weeks old, and stuck around for about 4 weeks, in which they grew in size, and excitability. They were SO naughty! But really cute with their individual personalities and markings - Leah's the one with the batman mask, Harry (patch, or gazpacho as I ended up calling him) had a big black smudge on his back, but a beautiful white face, and Jenna was a bit more muddly like her mum. Jenna was definitely the cheekiest monkey of them all, but she grew to be our favourite because of it, and there were almost a few tears when we had to put her in her pen and say goodbye - she did not want to be put down and it was heartbreaking.

OK, so you all know I a huge soppy romantic, and since today is mine and Hubby's two year wedding anniversary, I could wax lyrically about what a babe he is, how freaking lucky I am to have a man who not only my best friend, but the love of my life, as well as being a brill cook, makes-me-cry-with-laughter kind of funny, sweet, darling, and basically just a wonderful, wonderful man. I could go on, and on, and ON, about that, and I have before and sure as heck will again (just check out the Mr & Mrs section for all my gushy loving).

But today, I thought I would share a little game of sorts that I like to play when I think about our relationship, and the strength and length of our marriage. It's just a little fun, so don't get bent out of shape about it if you think it's in poor taste or anything, but the game I like to play is
"Which Celebrity Marriage Have We Outlasted Today?"

So far we've got these guys beat:

Britney Spears & Jason Alexander - 55 hours

Kim Kardashian & Kris Humphries - 72 days

Renee Zellweger & Kenny Chesney - 4 months

Marilyn Monroe & Joe DiMaggio - 9 months

Katy Perry & Russell Brand - 14 months

Lisa Marie Presley & Michael Jackson - 20 months

And today we can add Scarlett Johansson & Ryan Reynolds to that list. Go us!

In our near sights are:

Britney & Keven Federline - 26 months

Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz - 34 months

And way off, but who we'll obviously reach eventually, we've got:

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes - both 6 years

Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillipe

Heidi Klum & Seal - both 7 years

But then you've got couples like Beyonce & Jay-Z, who whilst have only been married like 4 years, are clearly never splitting up either (or else, you know, the world would end), so we'll never get them beat. But that's ok, we don't want to live in a world that Bey-Z don't run.

But in all seriousness, two years ago today, amidst all the pomp and ceremony, we quietly said a few words, exchanged rings and signed a little piece of paper and that is what stays with me. Getting married is great and all, and we did have one hell of a party, but as I told a few brides to be this week, it is nothing, NOTHING, compared the every day banality that is the sheer perfection of being married. Or maybe that should be the sheer perfection that is the every day banality of being married, I don't know, I kind of think they're both right in a weird way. It is the best feeling in the world, no doubt. (Well, except save for having some babies I'd expect)

Happy Anniversary Hubby! I love you beyond words and I can't wait to crush those pathetic celeb marriages with you. 7 years Seal & Klum, IS THAT THE BEST YOU'VE GOT? Bring on 70 baby, me and you.
But it got me thinking that if you'd asked me, probably even just a year ago, I'd have said that whilst tattoos were nice and all, I probably wouldn't get one done. I was never against them, I just didn't ever expect it to be on the cards for me. I had my tongue pierced when I was 16, but a few years later I swallowed part of it (urgh, the worst), and I really started to go off it and ended up taking it out when I was about 18/19 - just before I met Hubby actually. But getting a tattoo had never really crossed my mind until earlier this year when it was just suddenly all I wanted.

Getting that first (and then that second), have only fueled that fire for me to get even more; when you hear people say they're addictive? Yeah, that is so true. With that in mind, I've got a list as long as my arm of more ideas I have for my next. Here are a few of them:

"Take Care" (from the Drake song, Take Care) on the back of my neck, or, alternatively, as a MASSIVE chest piece - not quite sure if I'm bold enough for that though!

Flying geese silhouettes (referencing The Geese of Beverly Road by The National) just under my collarbone - this will probably be my next one, possibly at this same time as...

"Fiction" (referencing the Lucksmiths song, Fiction) on my upper arm

"We're the heirs to the glimmering world" (also from The Geese of Bevererly Road)

"Lucky You" (another National song... ok, I'm a little obsessed) along the inside my wedding ring finger

"Make a cup of tea, put a record on" (from Elastica's Waking Up), complete with a little cup of tea and a vinyl, maybe on my forearm

I also like the idea of getting a little heart on my elbow, a bit like this one that Katie from Skunkboy has (I love her style, a lot, but I think ripping off her tattoo like for like would be going a bit far). I'm sure there were more, but they've all flown out of my head right now. Basically, I've got major tattoo fever, and if I could afford it, I'd get a hundred tomorrow.

The only downside for me is not being able to give blood for 4 months afterwards and having to take a few weeks off from swimming each time, other than that, it is such a buzz. I couldn't recommend you taking the plunge and getting one enough - seriously, just go for it!

Do you know what I mean not being able to stop at one? Have you had one or are you holding on to an idea in your head? What are you waiting for?!

But yesterday I read a news story that has got me SO RILED, I'm literally taking to every social media platform I can to promote it's injustice and try to get more people aware of the issue and tackling it.

This article by the Guardian, Full-scale badger cull set to get government go ahead, covers the main points in great detail, in what I feel is a remarkably restrained unbiased way given that all the evidence of the independent decade long scientific trial shows that a cull is not an effective way to deal with the disease transmission.

The basic ideas are that bovine tb incidence, of which badgers are carriers, is incredibly high in certain areas of England (but not across the whole country which is where the cull is proposed to occur), but the research that has been done shows that killing the badgers doesn't really stop the spread of it, and can even increase it due to the disruption of the surviving badgers. So you would think it would be a no-brainer to consider some alternatives? Yeah, except the fact that the Conservative govenerment has cancelled 5 out of the 6 trials into the development of a vaccination (like what the Welsh government have decided to carry out, in place of a cull, yay Wales) that the last Labour government set up. So there is no real alternative at the moment, because they've done that.

The Environment Secretary, Owen Patterson, who may or may not actually be the devil (he's a climate change sceptic. Our environment secretary is a climate. Change. Sceptic. I weep, truely I weep), well, I don't really have words for him.

My favourite quote from the article?

"In an interview with the Farmers Guardian on Friday, Patterson appeared to cast the
proposed cull as being of benefit to badgers: "I find the attitude of those who want these

wonderful animals to die of this disgusting disease [bovine TB] completely

incomprehensible.""

Oh yeah, my bad, I'm clearly the monster here for not wanting innocent, healthy animals to die unnecessarily. *insert expletives*

Don't get me wrong, I don't want any animals to die unnecessarily under any situation, and if a small scale cull was scientifically proven to be the best way of handling this, then I wouldn't like it, but I would understand why it was being done. This, this I can't understand. This, even more so than the piecemeal auction of our beloved NHS, the under taxed rich, and all the other hairbrained schemes the government have done to throw our country to the dogs, this is the thing that really makes me despair for humanity. I don't believe in God, but if I did, this is when I would start praying for their souls because my god if these bastards aren't going to hell then I don't know who is.

Please consider signing the petition to stop the cull, joining or donating to The Badger Trust, or even just tweeting about it to let more people know, you don't know what difference it might make. Thank you for listening to my rant,
I don't really see the point of writing up a review of a book I kind of enjoyed in parts but didn't think was that great; some recent 3 star reads include And So It Begins by Jon McGregor, All Teachers Great and Small by Andy Seed, Cheerful Weather for the Wedding by Julia Strachey, The Rehersal by Eleanor Catton and The Green Dwarf by Charlotte Bronte, which actually was really enjoyable by the end, but when a book is only 100 pages long and 35 of those are just a nothing-y waffle, it drags the whole book down.

That said, in the midst of all of those I read a book which stood out a little more from the crowd. It wasn't a firecracker, and it didn't exactly blow my mind, by A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood is an exceptionally well written novel.

As with Haruki Murakami's novels (which I adore), it's not so much what the story is as how it is told. Nothing much really happens (which, if you've seen it, makes for a bit of a weird film - but again, it's beautifully shot and all the drama is in the nuances), the book, set in 1960s California spans a day in the life of an English, gay (but of course, it's Isherwood darling) college professor, George, dealing with day-to-day life after the death of Jim, his partner, exploring his feelings of grief and isolation, and his brief interactions with friends, students and neighbours. It's hauntingly beautiful at times and incredibly moving, and well worth a read if you value style over content. 8/10.

Colin Firth is really rather good as poor, introspective George in the film too, which also features a mildly surprising, but very noteworthy, appearance from the incredibly British Nicholas Holt as a glowing (literally, he's quite orange) Californian lost soul.
P.S. A Single Man is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer, but only until 11.49pm tomorrow (the 15th) evening, so you'll have to get in quick if you want to catch it!Rosie Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04382990120720541344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238016241084656742.post-74611276113525580972012-09-07T10:01:00.000+01:002012-09-07T10:01:25.855+01:00Shut Up and Play The Hits: the final days of LCD Soundsystem

I don't know about you, but I bloody love(d) LCD Soundsystem. From dancing around my bedroom to Tribulations and Daft Punk... as a teenager in to electro pop, maturing into Sound of Silver (and dancing in my uni halls constantly to All My Friends), right up to sitting in the car in Stonehaven on my honeymoon, eating chips and listening to This Is Happening as the rain poured down around us (and dancing all the while... Can you spot a theme here?), they are the kind of band that I never fully appreciated until they were gone - as is always the way it seems.

Whilst the world quietly mourned their spectacular demise on April 3rd, James Murphy et al got busy making what quite frankly will probably become one of my favourite films of all time, the aptly named Shut Up and Play The Hits. The name comes from a heckle from a backing singer during the final epic show at Madison Square Gardens, who's only y'know, Win from Arcade Fire, pulling out some cracking dance moves along the way. Here's the trailer.

Basically it's spectacular. That's all you need to know really, full on mind-blowingly spectacular. It's surprisingly emotional (or perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm not quite sure), even if you have no connection to the band or their music (not sure how that's possible but I'm willing to consider the notion), I fail to see how anyone could not be moved by James Murphy standing in a storage room full of the LCD kit for the last time before it's all sold off, wiping away a tear or the fans full on weeping at the end of the concert - they're tender, beautifully sad moments and it's incredible to be able to share them.

There are scenes in the film that might well strike you as mundane; watching Murphy have a full shave in real time, whilst an interview plays over the top, and the moments he shares in bed with his dog before his day begins, but for me, these were the most beautiful, treasured moments, captured so stunningly it made the ordinary extraordinary.

The crowning glory however was ALWAYS going to be 'the hits', the footage of the concert so glorious I spent most of the film/probably the rest of my life with an ache so powerful it physically hurt to not have been there, and to never have the possibility of seeing them again. My one and only complaint was not enough. It will never be enough. But my hope and vague understanding is that when the DVD is released, which I will be ordering post-haste (like, yesterday), it will come with a straight beginning to end concert disk as well. 4 hours of unadulterated BLISS. (Edit: I checked, it does). And then you're all welcome round mine for a dance party (seriously, it took all I had not to start one in the cinema, mid-film).

In short, Shut Up and Play The Hits IS AMAZING. And beautiful and emotional and just generally stupendous, I really couldn't have ask for more (except well, more). Most of the screenings were simultaneously shown on Tuesday but there are a couple of ones this weekend (check the website) but if you can't make it to those, you really need to buy the DVD ok? And the LCD Soundsystem backcatalogue for sure. Just trust me, you do. (you're welcome)

Has anyone else seen it? I hope you loved it too. I read a review that gave it 2/5 stars and thought, did we even watch the same film?! I give it 5*, without a shadow of a doubt - definitely worth missing Great British Bake Off for (don't worry, we're all caught up with James and his wonderful jumpers, er, I mean, the lovely baking...). Basically I want to watch it again already, so yeah, it honestly truly is that good.
P.S. On closer inspection of the website, it appears the DVD is being released in a fancy way, for more details check out this site, I'm a little torn because I want IT ALL. I love, love, LOVE the poster, am desperate for a T-Shirt, and quite frankly, wouldn't say no to a photobook... Usually we're content to laze around at home all weekend, with the odd trip to the market or the library, and stick on a good DVD box set - we got through all 4 series of Being Human in about er, a week, recently. I'm sure some people can think of nothing worse than being stuck inside all weekend, but we're real homebodies, so it suits us to a T mostly.

But yesterday was a lovely warm day, so we decided to make the most of it with a walk around a local RSPB reserve, Fairburn Ings. We picked the Riverbank Trail, which was sold to us as 'a bit of a walk', two hours later we arrived back at our car, thoroughly exhausted! We didn't manage to spot any of the promised Kingfishers, but we saw lots of other lovely ducks, swans, smaller birds, butterflies and even a dragonfly that followed us around for a bit. I would hardly class myself as a twitcher, but it was a really lovely way to spend an afternoon
P.S. What did you think of Doctor Who? I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was, but then I didn't have very high expectations going in. Eleven/Pond is by far my least favourite paring of the modern series, I know I'm in the minority, but my god am I looking forward to the end of Amy. I'm interested (and a little excited) to see how they manage to bring Oswin back - she seemed much more my cup of <strike>gin </strike>tea.

We got the train into Edinburgh for a lot of the days we were up; getting tatted up, buying out half of Avalanche records, sampling the wares at Brewdog (delicious, except for the 40+% ale which was ridiculous), seeing friends and catching shows - Josie Long, Dylan Moran, some awful guy who claimed 'musical racism' was acceptable (we walked out), Michael Legge & Phil Jupitus as Porky the Poet. But on the other days we just took it easy in North Berwick, having lots of romantic strolls along the beach and the coastal walks, climbing the Law and eating chips.
Time to go back to school already? The end of summer? Already?!

This month has been a total whirlwind. I feel like all I've done this month is work and sleep, and in the middle Hubby and I had a little jolly to North Berwick & Edinburgh in Scotland. I've got about a hundred photos to get through, so here's just a sneak of the things I got up to whilst away (spoiler, apparently it mostly involved looking at the floor).
That? Oh, that's just my SUPER AWESOME new tattoo peaking out. Follow me on instagram - @rosiefb - for a close up. Hubby & I both got our new ones done at Old Town Tattoos in Edinburgh and I could not recommend it enough, Nick who did both of ours was really lovely and crazy talented, I took him in a really rough sketch and he just made it perfect - it's so vibrant and colourful and everything I wanted and more.

Hope you've been having a wonderful 'summer' (what we've seen of it anyway), and are planning a fabulous weekend. We're off to Brighton tomorrow (12 hours in the car over a 48 period, kill me now eh?) for a weekend of debauchery and reminiscing about the good old times, when my friends and I weren't the old fogeys we apparently are now - one of them showed me a photo of Hubby from before I knew him today, and I didn't even recognise my own husband, how mad is that?! I can safely say that he has only gotten more handsome with age though. It's coming up for our 2 year anniversary soon, eeep!
First I wanted to focus on the positive, namely how freaking cute day old kittens are, and how rewarding it is to see them get fat and start to open their eyes and crawl around and turn into a mess of wriggly purrs when you tickle their bellies (Lopes, Ima looking at you).

All photos from mine and Hubby's instagrams.

Momma Misha is a bit of an oddity, you're not really supposed to get ginger females for some reason, but my goodness is she a beauty, she's been super affectionate and friendly for the most part, despite clearly being through the wars at some point (she's got a majorly broken tale). But she's really struggled with being a momma. Best guesses place her at about 18 months, which is super young, and it's impossible to know what happened throughout and how healthy she's been during her pregnancy, and the kittens were probably born prematurely, but for whatever reason, the kittens weren't feeding well, and before we got to the vets to sort it out (literally overnight) Parker and Chili passed away. They were the runts of the litter, and basically never meant to be, but my god if that wasn't the most heartbreaking day of my life.

I sobbed through the entire visit to the vets, where the vet told us, in as nice a way as possible, that they just weren't very strong kittens, and realistically, none of them would survive. She gave them some antibiotics and us some kitten formula and we began to hand feed them, which was a bit of mammoth task to undertake. Being so small they could only take on a few ml each feed (and struggled to take the bottle meaning we had to resort to drops from a syringe a lot of the time), and needed feeding every few hours, so basically we've spent the last few weeks being shattered from being up half the night.

Lopes has been feeding like an absolute champion, positively guzzling from the bottle, and getting really lovely and fat, almost up to her target weight! Tionne and Morissey on the other hand were not doing so well, and based on what the vet said, we weren't exactly hopeful. So whilst it wasn't a huge shock when Morissey died on Monday and Tionne followed on Tuesday, it was still desperately sad. They're all buried in our garden now and hopefully finally at peace. We did absolutely everything we could for them, but sometimes it's just not meant to be, not matter how awful it is to experience.

Even before they died, we'd pretty much decided we needed to take the kittens back to the center, because we just weren't going to be at home enough to keep up a good feeding schedule (Hubby had been working from home to accommodate them), but their deaths were, to use an awfully inappropriate expression, the final nails in the coffin :(

So the last remaining kitten Lopes and momma Misha left, we prepared to take them back on Wednesday, but not before yet more drama could occur. When trying to give Misha her dinner on Tuesday night, one of our house cats had snuck upstairs and scratched at the bedroom door. Misha absolutely FREAKED at the sound/smell of another cat, which she perceived as a threat, and in her panic, attacked me. The centre think she did this because she thought I could protect her and her baby, so wanted to be close to me, but she was in attack mode so it didn't really work out. Whatever her reasons, my face took a good mauling and I was pretty shook up by the whole thing (understatement). Poor Hubby had to get his best First Aider hat on when confronted with me screaming, covered in blood, and looked after me like a trooper - usually he's terrible in a crisis!

I haven't taken any pictures of my face because whilst it's cleaned up a lot better, it's still a bit of a mess, although the majority of the wounds are fairly superficial. She got my scalp, ear, cheek, neck, forehead, wrist, and really badly on my chin, which is where all the blood was coming from. Hopefully none of it will scar too badly, but I was more upset that it meant I wasn't able to give blood on Wednesday because of the infection risk.

Phew, a super long post I know, but it's been a bit of a crazy 2 weeks. Emotionally & physically tiring, and emotionally & physically painful (ouch), it's been a rough old induction into the world of fostering cats and kittens. I'm not sure we'll rush back to do it again, but I wouldn't rule it out, despite our awful experiences. It might be possible for us to take Lopes back for the last few weeks of her foster-hood, once she's weaned and a bit more independent, which would be wonderful because we did grow rather attached to her (to them all really), but whilst I don't blame Misha for it, I don't think I would be comfortable taking her back after what happened.

In all of this, we've tried to still give lots of love to our two kitties, and not have them suffer for the experience. I think they've coped alright :)
We've got the momma, Misha (BEY), and her 3 baby girl, the tabbies, and 2 boys, the gingers, who are a grand total of SIX DAYS OLD.

(and yeah, this does mean we now have 8 cats in our house, it's AWESOME)

We're still working on names for the kittens (we get to name them!), but provisionally, the girls are chilli, Lopez and tionne (as in, TLC, yeah) and Hubby just suggested Morissey and Marr for the boys <3
Promise I'll share more pictures when they get a bit bigger and y'know, their eyes are actually open and stuff. Don't know how we're going to let them go in 9 weeks time :-( I've got a feeling Misha B might be staying...
I know it's terribly cliched hipster of me to say so, but I really love the 'effect' of disposable cameras. There's something wonderful about the colours and the slight lack of focus, and how you never really know if the pictures are going to work. I love my digital, don't get me wrong, but you can go a bit crazy trying to get a shot just right, when you're not restricted by how many pictures you can take, and you end up not really appreciating the moment. I'm definitely going to be using more disposables on trips and holidays, because you get the added bonus of not worrying about the batteries running out or it getting filched. Anyway, the pictures...

Watching The Birthday Kiss under the blue skies.

So I might have got home from Indietracks over a week ago, but seriously, I have only just recovered. Disco dancing til dawn (including a nice bit of skanking to The Beautiful South and generally going a bit mental to any and all Belle Seb) and camping in a rather damp Derbyshire (and therefore getting about 3 hours sleep), as well as working my socks off being a super helpful steward for hours on end, left me more than a little run down, so this last week has mostly been spent face down on the sofa watching old One Tree Hill episodes - I'm a bit obsessed with how perfect all their teeth are?

I've also been waiting until I got my pictures back - I eschewed my fancy digital in favour of a very sexy waterproof disposable camera, because of the apocalypse that was forecasted, but fortunately never materialised, and apparently they take a week to process?? Who knew. All I had was a couple of instagram shots and a pop up on DiS courtesy of one of the multitude of new bezzie mates I made (it's only a small stretch to say that that list now includes Gordon McIntyre & Stevie Jackson too, BFF's yo), but I guess they'll do for now, and I'll post my proper photos later in the week.

Gordon in the Church being a bit perfect.

If I'm being totally honest, musically, no one really knocked me flat on my face and did a little dance on my body, except for Gordon McIntyre and Allo Darlin', both of whom I got to see up close and personal thanks to my amazing 'oh you can go ANYWHERE' Steward badge, who were mega ultra brill, but equally, not one of the bands I saw were in any way unenjoyable either (I had to miss Stevie because I was working, although I'm sure he'd have been boss too). I'd basically not heard of anyone going in to it, so it was all a pleasant surprise. My other musical highlights were The School, The Smittens, Bart Cummings + Pam Berry, Rose Melberg's solo set and the tiny bit of Standard Fare that I caught, just enough to have a good old boogie to Philadelphia - an absolute corker of a song.

But if you've ever been to Indietracks, you'll know that well, it's almost not even really about the music. It's about drinking real ale as you sit on the grass in the sunshine outside the tiny tin church listening to whoever and chatting with all the new friends you made, it's about riding the steam trains and getting a little bit cosy squashed in the guard van to take a chance on some band you've never heard of before, and hearing them do a Gina G cover, it's finding a mint copy of Parrell Lines on vinyl for a fiver and snapping that baby up, it's about the after hours disco at the campsite going on until the early hours of the morning, and drinking the bar in the engine shed dry of gin (yeah, that happened).

So whilst it might have been good if I'd known a few more of the bands, like in 2009 when Camera Obscura, Au Revoir Simone and Teenage Fanclub headlined, and I had a freaking blast watching their sets, at the end of the day, it's the experience that counts, and we still had a damn fine experience.

I would whole heatedly recommend stewarding Indietracks to anyone, a, because we could never have afforded to go otherwise, and b, because you instantly make a whole bunch of friends and people you recognise around the site, oh, and c, because it means you get the best seat in the house for any performance you like (as long as it fits around your shift of course, but even then, there is some flexibility). It was kind of a disorganised system at times, being such a tiny little homegrown festival mostly run by volunteers, but it all worked out and it definitely didn't put us off doing it again next year.

For now I'll leave you with Allo Darlin's set closer, the crowd-silencing, frankly a little bit magical, Tallulah.

Enjoying: My new job, so much. This morning I started doing mornings as well as afternoons meaning I had to get up at the crack of dawn (for reals, like 3 hours earlier than I normally get up) which was less fun, but that now means I have 3 free hours every morning which I'd have otherwise slept through, so I might be able to crack on with blogging a bit more now!

Watching: old Gilmore Girls - season 3 to be precise - I'm a Jess girl through and through, so these ones are my absolute faves. I know a lot of people seem to love Dean but yurgh! He's such a wet flannel, I can't even. Also some of the tennis & football that's been on, I like it, but I don't really care about any of the teams/players, so I'm not too bothered about the results. Murray's last match, and watching Rosol miraculously beat Nadal were both pretty exciting though.

Awkward's started back up again too, although the first episode seem to retread the ground of the first series a bit, but I'm hopeful it'll pick up - definitely worth giving a go if all your shows are on break like mine are (I still can't talk about that Grey's Anatomy series finale, so don't even go there).

Reading: A different version of The Yellow Wallpaper and other stories than the one I already have, it's got more stories and snippets from Charlotte Perkins Gilman's autobiography, so I'm kind of crazy stoked about reading it. If you've never heard of it/her, it's essentially hardcore feminist literature, written in the 19th Centuary, it's so boss.

Listening: Alligator by the National, always. Less PJ Harvey than I should be - I always love whatever I hear by her, but haven't gotten around to everything yet, so a friend lent me this DVD which I'm pretty excited to watch.

Anticipating: getting more tattoos when Hubby & I head to Edinburgh in August for the festival. I'm debating whether I'm brave enough to get a full sleeve dancing Penny Phonogram, I know it would look amazing, and I like to think I'm very Penny - give me a G&T, stick on Pull Shapes and I'm away, it's just a case of whether I can get her some legs drawn, we can afford it, I'm comfortable with the idea of getting such a MASSIVE tattoo.

I'm also looking forward to Indietracks so much, it's totally snuck up on us and it's so soon!

Eating: peanut butter stirfry & noodles. Chip butties. These beauties by the packetful...

Planning: to get started on Janel's 30 day journal challenge, er, at some point. If you've been reading for a while you'll know that it took me about 6 months to complete the last one, so don't get too excited, but I did love doing it, so maybe one morning this week I might get my craft on.

Feeling thankful for: my new job. I mean, yes, I'm completely exhausted all the time (you try running around after little ones all day and see how you cope with it :P ), but a, getting my first pay check was amazing & such a welcome boost to our household finances, even if I was super taxed - stupid basic rate - and b, it's so much fun! I was getting so bored and lonely sitting around all afternoon waiting for Hubby to come home, getting cross and upset when he had to stay late for whatever reason, but now I get to come home to him making me dinner! It's pretty great. He's pretty great really.

Oh my god, it's not even half 10. I feel like I've been up for an entire day already. Time for a cuppa and a lounge with my book now I think :) Hope y'all are having a great day so far.
Pretty mint green accessories helped to liven up a slightly boring get-through-a-hot-day-of-work outfit, not that I'm complaining about the sunshine though. Wearing tights in June felt way unnatural, even by my standards. These loafers actually came out of the men's section of Primark last summer, because I needed something a bit more substantial for the walk to work in than the endless variations of flipflops the women's section held.

My new job is proving to be a bit of a dream - yesterday we hung out at the park for a while & then played football until hometime! No one wanted to be on my team because I'm a giiiirrrrl, but I soon showed them. I've not worked out whether you're actually supposed to let the kids win at things or not yet, but I kind of feel like it does their humility good to lose occasionally, so I shan't be stopping my victory laps any time soon. Ha, does that make me sound a terrible person? Oh well...

Hello there, have you missed me terribly?

I took an unexpected break from blogging these last few weeks to deal with some personal issues. I didn't feel much like blogging, about them or anything else really - more like lying around in bed all day crying, but there comes a time when you've got to look yourself in the mirror and say 'suck it up princess'. The things that were crap in my life are still crap, but if there is nothing that I can do to change them, then I can't change them, so I've resolved to stop feeling sorry for myself and just well, get on with it. Blogging about what I was wearing and what I had for tea and such felt a little inconsequential in comparison to all the (melo)drama, but maybe I could use a bit of lightness in my day to day right about now, and a hobby just for the hell of it seems to fit with that.

The other reason I've not been blogging is that I started my new job last Monday, so I've got a lot less free time. It's been pretty brilliant so far though, and I'm dead excited for my first pay cheque to come through! The only downside so far is that it's making my other job seem even worse in comparison, so we'll have to see how much longer I last at that one...

So I might be blogging a little less frequently from now on (I value my evenings with Hubby too much, I hope you understand), but hopefully this is me, 'back for good', as that 'orrible Gary Barlow would say (I've finally started dropping my H's, 5 years after moving to Yorkshire).

P.S. One other reason is that my laptop is on the brink of death, and turning it on to type this up took me a good HALF HOUR. Craptop does not even begin to cover it.
My favourites were by Lucy Mangan, Lionel Shriver, Zadie Smith, Nicky Wire, Caitlin Moran & Stephen Fry, but there were lots that were enjoyable. The only one I thought was a bit rubbish was 'The Library of Babylon', but overall, it was really fantastic. There was lots of Tory-bashing too (I know I said I didn't enjoy the republican bashing in the Auster, but come on, the Tories want to shut down public libraries, what kind of monsters are these people??).

So basically it was amazing and you should definitely read it, and it inspired me to write a little love letter to the public library myself (I just joined my 4th county library, so I'm not saying I'm an expert or anything, but... Ha, obsessed is more like it.) Libraries are pretty much my spirit animal. Libraries have been the backdrop to my entire existence. I grew up going to the local library every weekend and maxing out my card with more books than I could possibly carry. I was your definitive bookworm growing up, I read everything and anything. I read the Hobbit when I was 10, just because I could (not because I understood a word of it). I amassed a pretty impressive personal library of my own over the years, but free books is not a notion that will ever not appeal to me.

As a teenager I literally used to hang out with my friends in Milton Keynes library. I know right, I was a lot of fun back then... *eye roll* We'd just sit in the Children's section and play on our Nintendo DS's (so cool), or read or do our homework, it was just our space to relax. Then we'd decamp to the reference library when exam time rolled around. Same with university, me & the JB Morrell library got pretty well acquainted over the years, to the point where, come third year, I was pretty much living there (I once accidentally blasted Sociology & Relgion with the Wicked soundtrack, and for that, I can only apologise), sneaking snacks from my bag and coming to depend on my thermos of tea more than was probably healthy.

I'm still a member of the York central library, even though I don't live there anymore (I may have er, forgotten to mention that I'd moved), which is a truly glorious system. Free requests meant that the amount of books available to you was effectively multiplied by about a million, and boy did I make use of it. North Yorkshire make you pay 75p per request, but I still manage to find about 5 new books to take out every time I return 3 (you're right, the math doesn't add up), and to top it off, I just joined the Leeds library so I can now have about 60 library books out at a time - it's possibly I already do.

My point is, free books. That's my point. How can you argue with free books? The day the Tories start privatising the libraries is the day I give up hope on humanity. Free books people. For children, for adults, for everyone, you even get free internet these days. Go support your local library & look out for The Library Book whilst you're there. Make the most of them whilst you still can!

This is the kind of dress I would wear to my nephew's Christening, if I were the kind of person to dress conservatively, erm, well, ever. I however am not, I am a raucously over the top, wear-hats-to-everything kind of gal, so this beautiful 'new' dress gets to be worn for an every day kind of day such as today. I don't really believe in saving things for 'best', unless those things are a fancy new hat with a bird cage veil, but even then I try it on about twice a day, even if I'm only wearing pajamas.

As beautiful as it is, it's one of those crease-the-second-you-look-at-them dresses, so it didn't particularly enjoy going through the wash, which lead to the first ever incidence of ironing in this incarnation of Chez B (we've lived here about 2 years, and it was possibly about 2 years before that when I picked up the iron last). I'm sure in some people's eyes that makes me a terrible slob, but well... I don't care. Ironing is boring! And the creases fall out the second you wear most clothes anyway. I think I'll know I've officially become a grown up the day I buy an ironing board (I used the dining room table this time). But not for a while yet, don't worry :)
