Eating Vegetarian/Vegan

(I know, I know, but we just got Band Hero and this is my favourite to sing)

Whilst this is primarily going to be a fashion-y type blog, what I eat is a pretty huge part of my life, so I just wanted to share a little bit about it, and what it's like eating a semi-vegan diet at home and eating out, and recommend some places to eat in the Leeds/York area. It's not going to be a preachy you-must-stop-eating-meat-and-dairy post, and I'm not going to get too graphic on the reasons why I don't, so don't worry about that.

(An example of one of my vegan lunches - so tasty)

My mother has been 'vegetarian' for going on 25/30 years (loose term, and I do understand the different labels, she eats fish, and ethically sourced meat occasionally, but she was always just a vegetarian to us growing up), and for quite a while, my brothers, father and I ate no meat, because she cooked no meat. As we grew up and learnt to cook and stuff, we introduced meat into out diets, but still not on a huge scale. I made the choice when I was about 11 to stop eating meat again, for reasons I can't remember, and that lastest a few years. Then I was a vegetarian who ate sausages... And well, it all just spiraled a bit until I was a fully fledged meat-lover again.

I left home to go to university in the autumn of 2007 and I last ate meat in January 2008 (apart from this one hamburger once, which we won't go into right now, suffice to say I didn't enjoy it). The reasons for me stopping eating meat are and were multiple. It's not just a case of 'oh-the-poor-little-animals', although animal welfare is important to me, and the meat and dairy industries having appalling levels and practices of care. The primary, totally selfish reason was that since I was now buying my own food, I couldn't afford the quality of meat that I was used to, and found it totally unappealing, so I thought, I won't bother buying this cheap, nasty stuff, I'll wait until I can afford nicer tasting, and more ethical meat. Another reason was that this was the time I met my now-husband, who was a pescetarian (ate fish) at the time - don't get me wrong, I didn't do it to impress him, but talking to him about it definitely changed my point of view somewhat.

My course at university definitely had a lot to do with it as well. When you learn about water scarcity and land management and sustainable food practices, it kind of changes your viewpoint. As I said, my primary objection to eating meat isn't the standard ethical thing, nor is it how disgustingly unhealthy/bad for your body meat and dairy products are (seriously, they turn my stomach now with how rich and greasy they are), but it's one of simple economics which I feel, with no offence to other vegetarians and vegans, is much more valid an argument. It's not about emotions or choices, it's just simple logical fact which I find very hard to argue with. I'll try and explain it super simply (not to be patronising, just to give you an overview), although it goes so much deeper than this, obviously.

There are a finite amount of natural resources on our planet, in the context of food production; water, non-renewable energy, viable land etc, an amount which is rapidly decreasing due to over consumption. And the simple fact is, it takes about 7 times as much carbon (I think it's carbon, don't quote me) to make a unit of meat products as it does a grain or a vegetable. It is an inefficient allocation of resources (can you tell I studied economics?), simple as that.

I still eat a little bit of cheese, which, yes, does still contradict my ideals/beliefs, but in cutting back completely on meat and significantly on dairy, I still believe it makes a difference. It's not really about abstaining but moderation (I would eat a little bit of meat if I wanted to, but I've lost my taste for it now, so I physically couldn't).

I'm sure that's not going to turn you all veggie, and that's fine, I don't really have a problem with people eating meat - although society as a whole definitely needs to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy, for environmental and health reasons - but I just wanted to give you some insight into my choices and reasons behind that.

I'll recommend some dining establishments in another post as this has got way too long and waffle-y! Thanks for sticking with me and feel free to comment with your thoughts.

P.S. Just to preempt a question veggies get a lot - I used to sometimes crave the saltiness of bacon, but not the texture or anything, but I think that was more a taste association because it's faded as the years have gone by. I've been a veggie now for 3 and a half years.

Hair styling

You might have guessed that I tend to do very little with my hair. It's down, natural, or it's up in a bun. Very occasionally I will wear a ponytail or a plait. My hair is very thick, and very long, and I love it to pieces. But I also loathe it and dream of chopping it all off regularly. We have a love/hate relationship, my hair and I.

It does get a bit boring doing nothing with it though, but I don't have several hundread pounds to fork out on fancy straighteners or curling tongs, so more often that not, I'm stuck with it. So when I read about a way to produce proper corkscrew curls without heat, it caught my attention. I watched this video first, and then just did it myself before bed - it's not exactly a complicated technique. All you need in an elasticated hairband and slightly damp hair. It worked really well at the front, as you can see below. I didn't take a picture of the back but that didn't really work at all so I did some little plaits (you can see one just over my right shoulder) to take away the flatness, but if you had curling irons it would be easy enough to just pop a few curls in at the back on top.

This was after I'd brushed it out a little, and the curls that were there held all day (and into the next). I was very impressed with the curls, and thought they looked nice, but if I'm honest, I don't think massively curly hair really suits me. Still, it was nice to try something different, and it was very easy to do.

Hairband: H&M
T-Shirt: Belle & Sebastian merchandise
Skirt: Topshop
Shoes: Kickers from Schuh

(The poster in the background is a print of the artwork from the Funny Little Frog single, by Belle and Sebastian - they're my favourite band if that wasn't obvious!)

P.S. This skirt is great for twirling.

Currently obsessed with...

Pretty storage devices!

Anyone who knows me, or has seen my house, will know that I am not the most organsied person ever - I'm not a slob, don't get me wrong, I just have a tendancy to let piles of paper stack up around me and often leave a trail of clothes behind me as I'm trying to get dressed for the day (I pick them all up, eventually...), but I am just such a sucker for cute storage. It's one of the reasons I adore Ikea so much, I could spend whole days in there - that's most people's idea of hell, I know. I love projects and the wishful thinking that, if only my house was as cute as this, I would totally always keep it tidy! (Obviously wouldn't happen, but a girl can dream right?)

I pulled all these images of http://organizeyourlifenow.tumblr.com/ - my new favourite website (well, joint alongside the craft/diy fashion heaven that is http://scissorsandthread.tumblr.com/), so pop over there if you want to find any of the proper credits - I'd recommend it, I died a few times over at some of the images.

Here are some of my favourites:

Mason jars and Veganomicon (a vegan cookbook) on the shelf! <3

The perfect fridge, beautiful to look and and super healthy. I need to start adding slice of something to my water filter.

Seriously, how cute is this?! I love the idea of the whole family having 'their' section. I would totally hang little wooden signs/stencil in the cubby holes; 'Mummy', 'Daddy', 'Baby bear'... - but then I'm just a big old softie.

And finally...

This is actually something I definitely need to do - because my handbag essentials are always all over the place and I'm a big believer in things have a 'home' in the house. I just need to find a drawer compartment as perfect as this one.

What I wore

Dress worn as a t-shirt: George @ Asda
Skirt: vintage, eBay
Belt: Primark
Necklace: gift

I really love this dress that I bought, but I snagged it on a fence and it's got a hole in now - which I'm hoping my mum might be able to sort out next weekend since I'm hopeless with that sort of thing/it's a really big hole - plus it's a little on the short side for work, so I decided to wear it with this fabulous skirt I got off eBay. The absolute perfect shade of mustard, I died when it arrived in the post. It's another of my go-to pieces because it is so comfortable and brightens up any outfit.

Hubby and I scored some vinyl at a local car boot on Sunday...

...as well as a copy of The Woman In White, a fold-up garden chair and a vintage train magnet for a present for my Dad - we just need to get a record player now!

30 Day Journal Challenge

(appropriate once you read on)

A little overdue, I know, thanks for bearing with me though :)

Prompt 7: A love letter to someone else
Haven't shown this to my mum yet - it doesn't really say everything I wanted it to, I ran out of space, so I might write a new one just for her.

Prompt 8: What would you put in a time capsule?
Struggled with this one (and it shows, sorry). So I thought about what I want to keep to show my children when they grow up (/are born).

Prompt 9: Completely fill your page with something random.  Leave your pen in your desk today and find beauty in the every day random things around you.
This is more like my scrapbooking. Just stuck some random cuttings in.

Prompt 10: Illustrate your favourite song.
Not necessarily my all time favourite song, but I do love it.

Prompt 11: What is your heart full of?

It's hard going trying to think out each page and how to work the prompts in, but I'm still enjoying it :)

What I Wore

Tunic: Urban Outfitters
Jean shorts and peep-toes: H&M

Hubby and I decided against the school fete yesterday, despite the nice weather, opting instead to have a lazy afternoon at home, watching the English Women's football team romp to, well, defeat in the end, but my gosh, what a match!

What a performance. I felt a ridiculous amount of pride in those women, right from the get go, for as small a thing as all singing the national anthem, to the fantastic resilience and perseverance they showed limping through extra time with crippling injuries, still making attempts on goal and holding the French off. Unlucky and disappointing to lose on penalties in the end, but what an incredible effort they made. Kelly Smith who could barely walk in extra time, not only assisted on an almost-goal, but went on to score her penalty with ferocious power and skill. I was speechless. So, so proud. Their performance puts our male team to shame, their passion, their endurance, their team spirit. Well done to them and to Hope Powell for leading them so far.

P.S. the photo in the background here was part of a retro shoot done by Hannah Millard Photography which I adore. She's a good friend of mine and superbly talented - she shot our wedding photos, I'll have to share some soon

P.P.S. Please ignore my dreadful tan. These shorts are too short to wear to work, hence my pasty pasty white thighs. I need to go to the beach!

Weekend Wishlist

This weekend will mostly be spent visiting the library, reading, crafting, baking, watching formula 1 and possibly attending the school that I work at's summer fete. I'm going home to see my Mother next weekend with Hubby and we'll hopefully be a little more exciting then, maybe going to see the new Harry Potter film, but this weekend is fairly typical of what we get up to - sorry, but we're pretty boring!

With that in mind, one of my favourite things to buy (and then never use) is notebooks. Totally boring right? They're not like shoes or handbags or anything exciting. But I just can't get enough! I have such a huge stack of them - and I do honestly try to use them, but I buy more faster than I can list.

I list obsessively - I'm trying to come up with one for Project Zero at the moment (101 things to do in 1001 days) but so far I'm stuck at 30! Can you think of any good ones to help me out? The inspiration pages are good, but the trouble is, I've done most of them!

Back to the notebooks however, I've compiled a little wishlist of my favourites at the moment...
Left to right: Jill Bliss, Marimekko, Moleskin

And like a fool, left out the one that inspired this wishlist in the first place! This beauty by Orla Kiley.

J'adore!

I got a little distracted from my craft journal, as I expected to, but I'm back on track with it now. I'll be ready to share my next installment with y'all tomorrow :)

Giving Blood

(from the Duke Spirit) for their album 'Give Blood' (geddit? bad pun I know, but I really love this cover where the parts are reversed from the original)

I wore this...

Halterneck dress worn as strapless: vintage from eBay
Tank top: Tesco
Lipstick: Toasted Rose Colour Surge by Clinique

And these...

Shoes: Kickers from Schuh

To go and get this....

Eeek! I was super nervous and being stuffed full of biscuits and squash before hand just made me feel queasy, but I did it! I was super brave even though it was pretty unpleasant. The pain from the needle being in my arm faded after a while of it being in there (my donation took about 10 or so minutes, because I had slow flow to begin with) and by the end it was totally painless. Getting my finger pricked to test my haemoglobin was probably the most traumatic part because they just kind of spring that on you, and it hurt a surprising amount. Oh, and I'm a massive wuss :)

But, now I've done it I feel really proud of myself (and hubby! He had to get jabbed by an extra needle to check his iron, but his actual donation was much faster than mine, so I'd say we're about evens on the trauma front). So far no bruising or dizziness, although I do now feel like I have a slight hangover. Remember to drink lots of fluids kids! Giving blood saves lives, so y'all should do it if you can.
